Another music composer bites the dust. I was listening to a rendition of Bert Kaempfert's Moon Over Naples (better known as Spanish Eyes) performed by operatic tenor Plácido Domingo and the music was weirdly familiar.
And then it struck me - it sounded almost exactly the same as A R Rahman'sTu bin bataye number from Rang de Basanti (2005). I suppose Rahman will now claim he was "inspired" by Kaempfert's mid-20th century creation. Wotsay?

Hi,
ReplyDeleteDont feel that with this is fit enough for calling ARR a copy cat...
the inspiration is very very minimal...
actually it took me many listenings of the spanish eyes before understanding what u were trying to say.....
bye
Srikumar: I know other music composers copy even more blatantly but for Rahman to do this seems unforgivable. But he remains my favourite composer.
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad. What would be the difference between Rehman and Pritam then?
ReplyDeleteThis can't even be called as an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThis tune by kaempfert has highs and lows which u also find in tu bin bataye and nothing else.
I can play both of these songs in keyboard. So, I know the difference. The tune is completely different. neither the instruments match.
There is no minimal similarity even. I listened to the spanish eyes many times but is not able to understand what you are trying to say. Can you plz spot the areas where you felt the similarity.
