An advisory to Indian cricket fans

India lost. Big deal! It's amazing how every Tom, Dick and Harry (or rather Om, Manik and Hari) is ready to maul the Indian cricket team. Come on, guys - they just had an off day.

Everybody has an off day. Even you Mr Architect, Doctor, Engineer, Peon, Singer, BPO Worker, Driver, Politician. How many times have you screwed up something at work? Does that mean you get fired every time?

It's easy for you to criticise - you there with the potbelly in that comfy armchair waxing eloquent on everything that's wrong with Indian cricket today. Would you have done better out there on that very same pitch? Nah, I didn't think so.

The worst offenders are the ones who keep saying they'll never again watch cricket on the telly. But come the next match, they tiptoe towards the remote control and sink into that cosy sofa and relapse into a harangue against Sehwag, Dravid, Chappell or whoever else is scheduled for the day's battering.

"How dare you Toe Knee," you say. "You don't even watch cricket." Ok, so I don't watch cricket but does being someone who loves cricket give you enough leeway to make sick SMS jokes or even attack poor Dhoni's house?

Why don't you behave the same way when Sania Mirza loses a match or Viswanathan Anand fumbles? Aaaaahh! I keep forgetting you don't care two hoots about anything other than cricket.

You were the ones who pumped up the Indian cricket team before their infamous defeat saying stuff like 'Blue Billion' and 'Hoo Haa India'. And now you are disappointed they lost. So what? People have bad days but they have good days too. Maybe now they will revamp the team and we'll put in a good showing in the next tournament.

Don't tell me you'll never watch cricket after this. I know, for sure, that you are lying.

And for those of you who are serious about this, Crazy Journo explores why politicians are thinking of making kabaddi the national game of India.

  1. Dude, tell me one thing.. Is your point that everything went well, this is the best team india could produce and just that they lost on that day?

If australia didnt qualify to the super six and you made these comments, i would agree with you..

Unlike australia, Indian cricket team played lousy cricket. You telling we shouldnt comment? Tell me who funds these cricket teams? for whom they play? who keeps them going? Its us.. You cannot deny that..

Its their job to do justice to their work. The enthusiasm they show while signing a deal to endorse a product should be displayed on the field as well..

Take Australia again.. They came to the world cup 2007 as a battered team.. major players hurt, for the first time in years slipped to No.2 position in ICC ranking, lost two cups to New Zealand and England, And how do they play when they get to the worldcup? They played world class cricket..

On the other hand, i do agree with the barbaric acts few indian cricket fanatics indulged in. It was a sad thing to do..

Apart from that, Stop defending the team and its performance.. Its the collective anger of this country which is making the BCCI sit up and make changes. If nobody bothers, the team would be the biggest loser!

Its our interests thats keeps them running!

  2. I agree absolutely wth most of your arguments. But I am certainly not defending the team or saying that it's the best one possible. I even said that a revamp might see them perform better in their next tourney. My "tirade" was directed at some cricket fans who are getting on my nerves :)

  3. I agree with you, the team is not to blame. They are, after all, products of the syatem. It is the system that sucks.

The stands were empty when Bengal played Mumbai, that is how much we care about sport.

When one does not follow a sport regularly, one lacks the ability to differentiate between good, mediocre or bad.

All we know are stars and celebrities. Often these stars and celebrities are created by the media to sell a product.

We dont care about cricket, we care about the stars. Some years ago the stands were packed to watch one such star. When he got out, shortly after play started, the stands emptied, though there were two and a half sessions of play still left in the day.

My advise to all cricket fans. Go watch the local matches, even tennis ball games will do. It is only through this kind of support that you will learn to appreciate the game.

Cricket is not just making big scores, learn to appreciate the art of a good bowler or an exceptional fielder. A delicate leg glance is far mor pleasing to the eye, than a hoik over mid wicket.

  4. Give others chance to flourish also.
Media projected cricket as this is the only game India should know and play.

Others players are doing good in their fields but they are not getting recognition.

  5. Rocrab: I wish there was a law to ban all sportspersons from starring in ads or charging appearance money for inaugurating malls.

Satya Prakash: My point exactly. Does the common man know about Saina Nehwal - she's a rising star in badminton. But who cares?
